In dense urban barangays, limited ground space hinders local communities from engaging in sustainable food production and greening efforts. Without accessible gardening plots, families face challenges in cultivating fresh produce locally, affecting both food security and neighborhood environmental wellness.
To address urban spatial constraints, members of Rotary District 3780 fabricated and turned over customized vertical planting drums along with fertile soil to Barangay 552, Zone 54 in Manila. Rotarians prepared modified blue plastic drums with side pockets designed for multi-tier planting. The team turned over the vertical planters directly to barangay officials and demonstrated how to utilize them for sustainable urban farming.
The donated planting drums provide a space- efficient solution that empowers residents to cultivate fresh vegetables, herbs, and chili plants directly within their community. This initiative promotes urban agriculture, enhances local food sustainability, and transforms small neighborhood spaces into productive green gardens.
